IT, like mental health, is a journey
Mental health benefits are getting more attention than ever before. Today’s workforce needs access to mental health resources — and often, they need them quickly. This is the premise Modern Health was built upon.
Alyson Watson founded Modern Health as a workplace benefit to connect employees to individualized, group, and digital mental health support in a timely and personalized way. Founded in 2017, the company now serves 1.9+ million clients and 800+ companies worldwide.
“Mental health is a journey,” says Jesse Calderon, Chief Technology Officer. “It has its ups and downs. Sometimes you’re doing well; sometimes you need help. Alyson’s vision was care within 24 hours, and that’s what we provide — a full-spectrum, needs-based solution.”
To support this innovative idea from a content perspective, and make external sharing not just possible but easy to secure and govern, Calderon’s team partnered with Box for intelligent cloud content management.
External sharing that’s easy and secure
Modern Health’s content security philosophy is to keep internal and external content entirely separate. The folks on the team use Google for internal notes and docs. But for external collaboration and to share informational content and contracts with prospects, customers, and consultants, the team sought a separate, highly secure solution. Calderon says, “We selected Box as that solution because it’s simple, easy, flexible — you can do open sharing or restrict it to certain people.”
Using Box enables teams like marketing and customer success to create folders of curated content so employees know exactly where to go to find standard files and folders they can share externally, helping with productivity. And should Modern Health decide to extend Box to its internal teams, the Box for Google integration will make it easy for employees to keep using familiar tools while storing internal content on Box for heightened security.

Self-service to the right content during the educational process
Modern Health uses Box to share informational content with potential customers and third party consultants helping employers choose the right benefits options. Buyers often work in HR but don’t necessarily have a lot of expertise in behavioral health products. Modern Health needs to be able to educate these people in a simple, frictionless way, sharing the right content at the push of a button.
Box provides this capability, even allowing prospective customers to self-serve to content from a custom portal. As Calderon succinctly describes Box: “It’s a simple way to share information with prospects. All these folks rely on us as a vendor to really educate them and to be that trusted voice saying ‘Yes, this benefit is going to take care of your people and your folks.’ Being able to provide education in a simple, self-service way is valuable.”
Content that’s easy to share externally
In addition to learning about the offerings, potential customers want to see various other kinds of information and business documentation. Rather than sending files via email or a typical consumer file-sharing solution, Modern Health uses shared links pointing to content held on Box. Shared links make it easy to send content securely and meet industry compliance requirements.
Once a prospect becomes a customer, Box remains the way to share and collaborate securely with everyone involved. Ultimately, there are quite a few content stakeholders using Box:
- HR teams at client companies
- External consultants that partner with client
- HR buyers to help them with their benefits packages
- Customer success teams at Modern Health assigned to particular clients
Secure external sharing is a business-critical need for Modern Health, so Box is a key partner.

Scaling worldwide on one content management platform
Calderon thinks about scalability in every technology decision he makes as CTO. The ability to share content with anyone, anywhere, straight from Box is important as Modern Health grows globally, and it’s important that a content platform be scalable.
He also says it’s always been critical to “build the technology from the ground up to work in many languages, then build out a local network of providers in each country and provide culturally centered care. Mental health support should mirror every individual.”
Frictionless external collaboration for a fast-moving company
Box has been the right content management choice for Modern Health, and Calderon says he particularly appreciates “the ability to share documents with folks in a way that is secure, safe, easy, and flexible — all the things that explain why we chose Box six years ago, and continue to use it.”
As for the team at Modern Health, they’re quite happy with Box. Calderon confirms: “They don’t have to ask a lot of questions. They just use it; it’s pretty frictionless.”
The top three things Modern Health loves about Box, according to Calderon:
- Ease of use: “We’re not introducing friction into the process of trying to get people the information they need.”
- Flexibility: “Box is flexible enough that if we’re working with consultants, and we have something that we want to make sure doesn’t get distributed, we can put some more permissioning around it.”
- The platform value: “It’s saving us money.”
Box has been here since the beginning. It’s ubiquitous. Everybody can access it. It was a strategic choice.
